Discovery Learning - Oxymorons and Paradoxes

Today we are going to try a new type of learning, a style of learning that requires you take charge of what you accomplish in one forty minute lesson. We are going to try “Discovery Learning.”

Discovery Learning allows you to be in control of important concepts and skills that you learn in class.

Your goal today is to define, explain, and utilize oxymorons and paradoxes in your writing. You may use any tool or website that you find helpful.

In your post, include the following:

  1. A definition of BOTH terms
  2. An Example and Non-Example of each
  3. Write a short piece in which you use 1 oxymoron and 1 paradox.
  4. Use complete sentences.

To me Oxymoron is defined as a figure of speech by using metaphors to put two terms together to make one. AN EXAMPLE:Butt Head, Great Depression or big baby. It is words that describe something your talking about.
Paradox is to me that it is a statement that is unaacceptable or to form an conclusion with a "Sense of humor". AN EXAMPLE:Nobody likes that resturant, it's to crowded or Do not go near that water until you learn and know how to swim.

Paradox - a sentence that apparently contradicts it’s self but really holds a possible truth. Sometimes this kind of sentence is used to contradict false statement. It’s also used to show an opinion that’s not like generally accepted ideas. A paradox is used to make a reader think if a point in a new way.

Example of a paradox is contained in Caesar’s speech from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar:

"Cowards die many times before their deaths.
Act II, scene ii : line 32"

An oxymoron is ia figure of speech when you say something that contradictual. Basically, your contradicting yourself. A paradox is something that seems true but also contradicts itself. For example a sentence for an oxymoron. Ex: And faith unfaithful kept him falsely true. If its true, how could it be false, and how can you have faith unfaithfully. Ex: Paradox - This paper is false. It is talking about itself. It is highly impossible to be false and true at the same time.

Oxymoron- When you say a word and the opposite of that word in the same sentence.

Example- In math you have to find a accurate estimate.

Nonexample-In math you have to guess a estimate.

Paradox- A statement that contradicts itself.

Example- Nobody goes to that place its to crowded.

Nonexample- Everybody goes there because its popular.

Paradox-like a riddle or a ridiculous act..
Oxymoron-saying something that is stated but it has a bad and good meaning to it.

-"im a f***** walkin paradox,no im not.
a quote from a famous rich rapper using the word oxymoron by Mase
-"Mase broke,thats an oxymoron"
Its a paradox, that i love this girl but i cant stand to be around her.

Oxymoron: a figure of speech that is like a contradictory or a conjunction.
Paradox: opposites that could be true.
A paradox is as a controdictory. Like a boy being so into God. Like going to church every Sunday, preaching, praying at every meal, and everything. But they do all this "Godly" stuff but they're running around having sex with everyone and their mom, cursing
