Context Clues and Your Reading

This week we have been talking about using context clues to figure out unfamiliar words and confusing passages while you’re reading.

Today, your task is to answer the questions:
  1. Why is it important to identify and understand words you didn’t know?
  2. How does increasing your vocabulary help your understanding of the world around you?
  3. List 3 (or more) words from your PCR book that you used context clues to give meaning to, and explain how that helped you understand the book more completely.
  4. What do you think this mean – “You can never use a new word until you ‘own’ it.”

Blog entry Rubric:
Proficient – 2 paragraphs entered in class blog about their this week using context clues consciously, during their entry students must utilize at least 3 new words that they learned from reading this week
Non- Proficient – less than 2 paragraphs entered in class blog, students use less than 3 new words that they learned this week from reading

**Once your blog entry is completed, read this short selection. **

1-it's important because when you do know you will explain to someone else who doesn't know and tell them.
2-If someone is talking and say's a word you don't know, you will be confused. Also, you may be with the conversation.
3-first is obliterated, that mat mean to blow up for beremoved. sdewcond is acupncture may mean or be a body owund. third is dismantled may mean sad or upset or have been banded from a group.
4-To me it means that if you don't understand a word or can't say it then you can't use that specific word until you know it and understand what it means.

Why is it important to identify and understand words you didn’t know?
It is important to do this because later on in life you might need to use this word and if you don't know what it means you will have trouble using it life.

How does increasing your vocabulary help your understanding of the world around you?
The increasing of your vocabulary will help you understand the world around you because in life some people use big words or words you never heard before. So context clues could help you figure out wat the word means.

List 3 (or more) words from your PCR book that you used context clues to give meaning to, and explain how that helped you understand the book more completely.
1)Embracing means holding tightly onto someone or something. I used context clues to help me figure this out by reading around the word at other words.
2)Glee means happpy, joyful, and excited,I used the direct definition context clue for this word.

You need to identify and understand new words so your vocabulary can be enhanced. If you increase the level of your vocabulary you will understand the world around you more because you will understand what people are saying around you. A few words I used from my book are resent, caroming, and recuperate I used context clues to find out what they meant and it helped me figure out what the characters in my book were talking about. I think the phrase "You can never use a new word until you own it" means you cant use a new word until you learn what it means.

It is important to understand words you dont know because it will make you a smarter person.if you understand words that you didnt know before you would be able to read book and passages a alot easier.increasing your vocabulary will help you understand the world around you because you wont be off-to-date on some of these words and you would know what these words mean and also you would be able to understand the world around you.
The word"ambition",i didnt understnand this word til i read the paragraph fully and another time.second, the word"millennium",i understoof this word when the passage kept bringing up words dealing with this year and the years before.and last, the word"obsessed",i understood this word cause the girl kept being around the guy and he was starting to get creaped out and he didnt like it anymorethe quote “You can never use a new word until you ‘own’ it.” means you need to understand these words before you can understand the world.

1. It is important because you have to know what you are reading and so for that you have to know what words mean
2. Increaceing your vocabulary does matter because doing that will make you so much smarter and earn alot of respect around your world.
3. Three words that i didn't know at first was assured, chimed, and smirking. assured means to agree, made corrrect, or backed up by somebody who thought you were right. chimed means butted in, putting your opinion in, or got in a conversation without being asked. smirking means to smile with some kind of ego or something your going to do to someone.
4. i think that this means that you can't use a word util you know that word left to right back and forth or upside down. so before you use a word find out what it means or in other words own it

It is important to identify words you dont know beacuse if you dont know them you wont fully understand what you are reading. it is also important to identify words you dont know because if you know them, it will increase your vocabualary and you can use them later. It could also make you soud smarter if you know them for like an essay or test you want to get a better score on. Increaseing your vocabulary helps you understand the world around you. It hels you because if you have a better vocabulary you can understand more people and more stuff.

"You can never use a new word until you own it." I think "owning" the word means that you fully comprehend it. So if you dont fully unerstand the word you cant really use it. Correctly. Words that needed context clues to figure out: Infiltration, harassment, vigilance. I found out what these words meant (except 2 of them which I knew) by searching around the sentence. they all helped my understand the section of the story better.

It is important to understand words you do not know. This is true do to the fact that the better our vocabulary the better we are able to communicate with others and also to impress others for things of importance. “Decoding” or understanding words of the unknown, in your mind, gives better description of everyday life. It could give you both a better understanding of everything around you. Whether it is a negative or positive outlook. You can give name to things that you didn’t have names for before.
“You can never use a new word until you ‘own’ it.” Is a quote that I believe tells more about my explanation above. This quote is saying something about how you must clearly understand, or own, the definition of a word to use it properly. Such as the words; Creosote (pg. 31); Canvas (pg.32); or Nonsensical (pg.34). These words I believe a third of our class may not know.

Its important to understand the words you don't know because it helps you understand whats going on around you. And what people are talking about.
Increasing your vocabulary helps you understand the world around you because it helps you understand and be aware of your surroundings and what is going on.
3 words that I used context clues for were trajectory, falliable, and disparate because it helped me understand that the students in the book would not understand the words because i didn't understand the words.

This week in english was great just like always I learn many new things everyday. I can honestly say that this class is an A+ in my book. I learned context clues and know I us this strategy everyday in my reading.

Is important to single out words we do not know because it would help us better understand are reading. well with a great vocabulsry the better your knowledge would be about the world that evolves around you so the better you will understand. Ambition, millennium, correspondent these words I did not understand well but with context clues I emidietly had an understanding of these words. You can us a word unless you understan it an can give you're own meaning about these words.
